Phewww…
Just finished hand-tapping out replies to a buncha emails.
From subscribers…
And happy Dopamine on Demand readers.
But:
It must feel good getting a hand-typed email from an actual living, breathing, heart-pounding human, ay? None of that AI slop email that everyone and their favorite Filipina freelancer’s sending out these days. Ain’t that nice?
I imagine it must feel like…
… flipping open your dusty, rusty ol’ mail box…
… and screaming in delight because you got yerself an actual pen and paper hand-written letter!
Which is rare as a snake with two feet these days.
And probably…
… ‘old-fashioned’ as using a Nokia 3310 phone.
But apparently, according to the wifey, people are lovin’ it right now, with savvy art business owners creating snail mail clubs by the boatload.
But:
It reminds me of something the UK advertising maestro and president of Ogilvy & Mather, the great Rory Sutherland once said when… people asked him for cutting-edge, innovative new ideas for marketing their businesses.
His reply?
If you want to be innovative?
Study what old-school marketers and entrepreneurs did a hundred years ago.
Or more.
And start doing that… instead of… all the newfangled, AI technobabbling wizardry everyone and their mom is doing these days.
Why?
Well, simply because…
History’s just littered with examples of idea after idea that worked like gangbusters on crack, but people and businesses just stopped using them for no good reason.
Maybe they got bored.
Or distracted by ye olde ‘shiny new object’.
And threw it all away just to play with their new ‘toys’.
It ain’t new.
You’ve probably had it happen to you too.
Case in point:
Direct mail. AKA sending sales letters by snail mail. And getting sales from people writing in and replying to them. Effective as heck, and probably one of the most simple yet powerful forms of marketing known to man and money.
Why did businesses stop using it?
Even though it never stopped working and bringing home the bacon?
Who knows…
People are insane.
Marketing with postcards:
Never stopped working. Still works like gangbusters on steroids for those who know how to do it. So why do most marketers never use it?
Who knows.
People are bat poop crazy distracted these days.
With hot trends that make you drool, but just ain’t workin’ to bring in the gruel.
But you know what’s just as bat poop crazy?
The fact that…
… if you take something that’s 100 years old, and start using it again, and talking ’bout it again, and building a business around it again…
… all of a sudden…
… people think you’re a genius!
Oh puhleeze…
No, Instagram or YouTuber didn’t invent Influencer marketing.
It’s been around since time immemorial. When biz owners gave free clothing, food, supplies, building material, etc. to priests, monks, or whoever was the head of their religious order… in return for… getting free advertising, or even getting their businesses recommended to other people following their temples, or synagogues, or churches, or what have you.
Neither did Apple or Google invent ‘smart glasses’.
I’ve seen pics from the 1960s…
… of people wearing “TV glasses”.
And watching their favorite shows on the go.
Think all those fancy, schmancy robot servers you see in restaurants are new? Cutting edge? Crazy innovative?
The Japanese already had all that in the 17th century.
And they were made of wood.
And didn’t need any electricity.
Or AI. Or memory chips.
And they were much cuter and lovely looking too.
But:
Long story short…
Ain’t nothing new under the moon. Or sun.
But if you truly wanna be a breakthrough innovative, instead of being just a wanna be, and do it in a way that almost no one else in your industry is doing…
… then you’d best be learning lessons from the old.
Not the new.
Stuff from your grandpappy’s days.
Maybe even your great-grandpappies.
Stuff like the ancient Greek technique I talk about in my latest work on creating Dopamine on Demand. That’s so powerful for getting people to hard-wire remember your content, that… shocked neuroscientists are still studying it today.
It’s on pages 48 & 49 by the way.
In case you were wondering.
But if you haven’t checked it out yet…
… along with all the other parts of my 3-piece system for…
… creating content and copy that’s so seductive to the brain that…
… it instantly spikes brain lobe activity…
… while getting people craving to consume more, remember more, and take action more…
