This is probably the most creative way to explode your sales:
But I was reading about this television rental company that was really popular in the 1980’s.
And:
At that time, TVs were really expensive.
Both to own, and to repair.
So there was a huge trend of just renting them. So you didn’t have to deal with the hassle and stuff. But this one rental TV company needed more customers. And so, they hatched a diabolical plan to get them.
Because whenever one of their customers rented a TV…
… before they delivered it to their house…
They’d go ‘accidentally, but on purpose’ knocking on their neighbor’s door instead, and going, “Mr Smith? Your 28-inch color TV from Rental TVs is finally here!” And the neighbor would go, “That’s not me! Mr Smith lives next door.”
And the delivery guys would just apologize profusely…
… before they’d finally deliver the TV to the right guy.
But:
After doing this a lot…
They found that a massive number of neighbor’s would actually come to their store within a week, and start renting 28-inch color TVs. Just like their neighbors.
Why?
Because…
There’s actually two main ways people decide whether to buy something. Or not. And if it doesn’t fall into one of these two ways, very often, people won’t buy it… even if they crave it in their dreams!
What are the two?
Habit.
And social copying.
Meaning:
You buy stuff from brands you already have a habit of buying from. Over and over again.
Or…
You just buy what you see everyone else is buying.
And if you don’t see anyone buying it?
Then you don’t buy it either.
No matter how much you crave it.
Now, this isn’t true for everyone. But it IS true for 94% of people. And this is one of the main reasons why it’s so hard to get traction when you’re starting out from scratch. Because there aren’t enough people buying from you to ‘copy’. But once you’ve hit critical mass, and you have a certain percentage of people in your niche using your stuff, the ‘sales snowball’ just keeps rolling down the hill until it hits critical impact and explodes.
And this is also why:
When the biggest companies in the world today, like Facebook and Amazon just started out, they went insanely niche.
Facebook was only open to people from Harvard.
Once they dominated that, they expanded to the next college. And the next, and the next.
When Amazon first started, they specialized in books.
And once they dominated that, they expanded to… I think it was toys.
But they did all that because:
When you’re just starting out, before you dominate your niche, you need ALL the ‘psychological triggers’ you can get, infused right into your offer. To get people to actually buy.
