How showing up in AI Search can murder your sales and spike refunds

This is the (surprisingly) dark side of AI search not many people seem to talk about:

(with the exception of those fed up business owners, quietly sobbing and complaining in a lonely corner of the comments section somewhere on the web)

But:

I was reading a comment on YouTube by this gentleman who owns a motorcycle parts business.

And I’m not sure if he optimized his site for AEO…

… or CrapGPT just happened to ‘optimize’ it for him.

Nonetheless:

He’s been getting lots of customers coming to him…

… buying parts from his store that CrapGPT recommends for fixing their motorbikes, but…

… in a shocking turn of events…

… because CrapGPT keeps hallucinating so bad you’d think it was on magic mushrooms…

… they keep buying the wrong parts from him!

Parts that absolutely don’t fit at all, creating a huge MESS with customers running back and forth between buying at his store and getting refunds, buying and getting refunds.

Apparently:

Lots of customers can’t believe that CrapGPT isn’t always right.

Or even worse:

Some of them even get plain pissed off when store owners ‘accuse’ their beloved CrapGPT of lying. As if it were a childhood friend they’d sworn their life and death to.

Even more so when it comes to store opening and closing hours.

(imagine your customers waiting outside for 2 hours and insisting it’s your fault)

And return policies.

(imagine customers demanding refunds from you that don’t even exist)

And even… what services and products business do or don’t offer!

(image customers demanding you honor your $9.99 deal on chainsaws they saw in CrapGPT when you’ve never sold a single one for a penny under $100)

But:

These customers are leaving in a huff and puff, looking at store owners like prehistoric dinosaurs who haven’t yet discovered fire, ‘cavemen’ who simply don’t understand the wonders of modern technology… reluctantly forcing their superior ‘advanced-selves’ to move on in search of better businesses who might not hail from the Stone Age.

It happened with this bookstore I read about…

… with customers getting ‘red in the face’ at the store owner because…

… a book CrapGPT recommended didn’t even exist!

But they thought the store owner was ‘behind the times’.

More:

Another comment was from a chap who does carpet installations for a living. And a customer kept insisting on how CrapGPT said his business offered one-day installations. And while he does offer one-day installations, unlike what CrapGPT is claiming, he doesn’t do it on demand. It requires an extensive measuring, ordering, and wait period.

But once again, the customer just couldn’t believe it…

And it’s not just CrapGPT either.

Our pal Gemini is doing the same thing.

And you’d think a Google AI model would do better. But I’ve been reading a comment from a tool rental place, about how… while they don’t do any repairs, they’ve been getting CONSTANT never-ending calls from customers asking them to fix their tools.

At this point:

If AEO is working well for you, then swell.

But all it takes is for even one AI model to start hallucinating about you or your business, and there you go… your phone is ringing off the hook, 24/7, with angry and irate customers who want your bloody head on a stake.

The solution is simple, of course.

Just hide the phone number on your website.

And replace it with with an AI-chatbot to keep your customers cozy. Preferably, one that will ‘hallucinate’ positive things about you. And keep your customers running in a circle until they forget the real reason they were ever upset…

… and start directing their anger at the AI bot instead.

That being said:

I’m not even sure it’s worth being on AI Search…

… given all the ‘problems’ it’s been known to cause, like all the nonsense I talked about in my last email on how ‘I pity da fool who uses CrapGPT’.

Haven’t read that yet?

It’d be best if ye go back and do so…

But:

While showing up in AI Search, and having the AI-overlords ‘lie’ about you might lose you some sales, and leave you in a tizzy dealing with customer support and refunds…

I’d say it pales in comparison to…

… all the sales you’re potentially losing because of how AI is now destroying one of the most important factors that…

… determine whether whatever you’re selling…

… lives or dies!

And it’s a factor so terrifying, even billionaires never ignore it. To the point that, it’s the number one thing billionaire investors look at before they ever touch a business or investment. Because the moment AI kills this, nothing else can fix it.

No copywriting.

No traffic hack.

No ‘grand slam’ offer.

No billion-dollar bonus.

Absolutely zilch.
